Video Challenges

You are required to post to the Essential Skills blog at least THREE times during Quarter 2.  There will be many video assignments on the blog from which you may choose.

If you have completed all of your assignments AND you are happy with your grades AND there is nothing you can do to make your grades better at this point, then please visit the following links to learn more about test anxiety and how to study.  You may get up to get a set of headphones.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS VIDEO ASSIGNMENT #3

1) Watch at least the first 40 minutes of the documentary Distracted by Everything (Frontline, Digital Nation).

2) Respond to the following:
As a teacher and a parent, my hope is that young people can see the value in focusing on a single task at a time.  I truly believe that when we are distracted with constant interruptions or are trying to do two things at once - we are not truly capable of doing either task very well.

Certainly, there are times when we can, or should, divert our attention away from the task at hand.  But, in able to truly learn and study something new, we need to focus all of our attention on that new thing.

Think about and answer the following questions on the blog:
  • What thing can you think of that you will need to (or want to) learn in the future that will require your full attention to learn?
  • How do you think this unit on multitasking will change your own study habits, if at all?
  • How do you think the human brain is being affected by the near constant use of technology and the distractions this use creates?
Please use proper grammar in your comments.

  1. I will need to learn how to write bibliographies, do my taxes, balance a check book, and drive a car in my future. These will all require my full attention. I think the unit on multitasking will definitely improve my study habits. I will be able to take in more information at once. I think the brain is being affected by technology badly. We can never seem to pull ourselves away from our technology. In some ways it does help, but most would suggest it does bad things to our brains and how we learn and think

  3. I have test anxiety when it comes to math because I don’t have a lot of time to study .I get really nervous when it’s a test or pop quiz. I needed these techniques to help me be more on topic. When I’m on topic I seem to do a lot better on test when I’m not under stress .Relaxation Techniques will help a lot.

  4. I think that you can minimize your test anxiety by studying shorter time lengths.Like 20 minutes at a time. You should also put your phone away.

The day before a test you should not be staying up until midnight. You should not be on your phone well your studying. You should not be cheating the day before the test.

  6. I think that you should study more because if u don’t study sure you might know the stuff that’s on the test but if you study it will refresh your mind on the work that has to be done. Also when you are studying you shouldn’t use your phone so much minimize yourself like after one homework page respond to a text. And be sure to have a snack and drink next to you so you don’t have an excuse to leave or get up.-Dabking564

  7. I watched kids pick the president and he really inspired me because he’s right about everything. His pep talk is what need to happen to us and we all need to listen to him. He is so right when he says never stop believing. He is right when he says that we can create something awesome if we put our mind to it. Life is a journey so take the road less traveled.

  9. The video of nine test taking tips are very useful like if you know a test is going to be in the future, in stead of an 10 hour study time you can do a 30 minutes of every day to study, and etc......
